BRIGHT COMET
OBSERVED LAST NIGHT COMPARABLE TO HALLEY’S “It was the brightest I have ever seen in my life and probably as bright as Halley’s,” said Mr D. C. Berry, of the Berry-Thomson Observatory, last night in describing a comet which was prominent in the heavens. Mr Berry said the comet had been observed in Australia on Tuesday night near the planet Venus. Last night it was about 12 degrees south of Venus. The comet had been clearly visible without the aid of a telescope about 9.30 p.m., Mr Berry said. Its size appeared to be equal to a star of about the first or second magnitude. The tail, which he estimates at about 4 degrees, was composed of a number of streamers all blending together. It was a matter of extreme interest to astronomers in Dunedin, he said, and it was hoped to get another glimpse of the comet to-night, when it should be further apart from Venus in the western sky.
