NEWS OF THE DAY
Parking Offences “ The average motorist takes no notice of the parking regulations,” said Mr E. H. Barrett, chief traffic inspector for the City Corporation, when four motorists were charged in the City Police Court yesterday with parking in prohibited areas, four others were charged with exceeding the parking time limit, and another was charged with parking on a taxi stand. “My department has had considerable trouble with motorists over the parking regulations during past months,” Mr Barrett added. Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., informed one defendant that he was not empowered to suspend the by-laws in special cases, but motorists could approach the corporation if they wished the by-laws to be altered. Salutes to be Fired Two 21-gun salutes will be fired by the army in Auckland. The first will be to-day to mark the anniversary of accession of King George VI to the Throne, and the second, on Sunday, will be in honour of the King’s birthday. Both salutes will be fired from North Head. Disinterested Pupils “ Not only are some pupils not interested in school work; some appear to have no interests whatever. Sports, hobbies, handcraft, reading, all these they regard with only languid eyes,” said Mr H. D. Tait, headmaster of the Hamilton High School, in his annual report. These were the pupils that presented a real challenge to the schools. Happily, they were a minority but they were a drag on progress. Parents could do much by taking an active interest in hteir children’s work in school and at home. Moa Bones Discovered After the discovery at Birding's Flat, North Canterbury, recently of two fossilised moa bones by E. Dawson, a pupil at Christ’s College, a search for the remainder of the bones of the bird will be carried out by the acting director of the Canterbury Museum, Dr W. R. B. Oliver. The bones were found in some loess in a hillside and belonged to a heavilybuilt moa about four feet high, said Dr Oliver. They were a comparatively recent deposit. A search for moa bones might also be carried out shortly in the Timaru district, he said. Novel Chain Letter
Something new in the way of chain letters has reached Christchurch. It holds out promise of the receipt of 256 handkerchiefs to those who faithfully follow instructions by sending the letter on, accompanied by handkerchiefs to four other persons, and with the sender’s name added to the list of addresses enclosed. A housewife who received a letter with one handkerchief enclosed from a West Coast post office is now facing the problem of whether to gamble on the purchase of four handkerchiefs in the hope of a rich reward.
“A Humble Person ” “I am, after all, a very humble sort of person,” said the Minister of Health, Miss Mabel Howard, when she spoke at the opening of a new house at the Burwood Girls’ Training Centre, neai Christchurch. “I really cannot see very -much dignity or great honour in being a Cabinet Minister. All 1 have found out is that it is a lot of hard work. When J got into the Ministry and they hunted round for a portfolio to give me, I rather hoped they would give me education. I had a sneaking regard for education. But I think they gave me the right one when I got the portfolio of health.”
