Meeting of Executive
Mr W. C. Burdett, the vice-president, presided at a meeting of the executive of the Oamaru R.S.A. on Tuesday night. Also present were Messrs D. 11. Scott, J. Macaulay, J, McLeod, J. Tavendale, L. Clark, A. Bremner, R. E. Dimick. and E. M. Freeman. Motions of sympathy were passed with the relatives of Messrs Robert Bell, Thomas Cooper and F. Scott, all members of the association whose deaths have occurred. Letters of appreciation were received from servicemen patients at Waipiata at the action of the R.S.A. in arranging transport for North Otago men to their homes for the Christmas holidays, the R.S.A. paying the cost of the trip, and the Red Cross Society undertaking to pay the cost of tile return journey. An invitation from St. Luke's Anglican Church to attend the morning service on Sunday, when the Bishop of Dunedin will dedicate an altar, re red os, and panelling in memory of those who gave their lives in the Second World War, was accepted, members being requested to attend ' the service Temporary Club Rooms In reply to an application for a lease of the ground floor room at the Athenaeum, the Athemeum Committee advised that the request had been declined. In a discussion about temporary club rooms it was mentioned that no reason was given for the request being declined, but that it was understood that the stage had- been reached for the Athenaeum to be handed over to the Oamaru Borough Council. The secretary reported that no reply had been received from the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills concerning the building next lo the Athenaeum. It was decided to write the Christchurch R.S.A. asking them to make further inquiries from the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills. Messrs Burdett, McLeod, Freeman, Dimick, and the secretary, Mr A. C. Piper, were appointed a deputation to wait on the Borough Council concerning the Athenaeum room. Tlie meeting agreed to the suggestion by the Girt Guides’ Association that the annual competition between companies for the R.S.A. Cup should be held in February. Two new members were elected, and five inward and eight outward transfers approved. Land Settlement Mr D. H. Scott reported on an examination of the remits on land settlement, saying that the policy was rather rigid and, if it were more elastic for different districts, it would be more successful. There was a need for hastening land settlement in Otago and Southland, and if they relied on local committees it would be all right. ' Messrs Bremner and Burdett reported on visits to the hospital. Messrs Clark and Freeman were appointed visitors for this month, and Messrs McLeod and Macaulay for next month.
