WESTLAND BY-ELECTION
Sir, —Your leading articles, and the footnotes to letters, seem to be extremely biased. You seem to expect an untried man to poll as well as a very popular Minister of the Crown. It cannot be that you expect the National Party to do any better if it gets into power. As taken by results over 60 years they have always made a sorry mess of everything. On the other hand, they have opposed everything likely to uplift the people. The last sitting of Parliament proved that beyond any doubt, especially when the secret ballot on strikes was going through. They brought in all sorts of amendments that they knew the unions would never accept, and if these had been carried they would have caused a general labour upheaval from Auckland to Bluff. What fairer could anyone wish for than that every worker should have a vote on whether there is to be strike or not? It does not seem fair for the newspapers to be so biased when three-quarters of the electors voted Labour. I think these tactics will work out the opposite way to that intended, because the public does like fair play.—l am, etc., Karitane. O. Johnston.
