PHYSICAL EDUCATION

ADDRESS BY SPECIALIST The Otago branch of the Physical'Education Society of New Zealand held its final meeting for the year last evening. Teachers who had prepared groups of secondary, intermediate and primary schools’ pupils for the demonstration held in the Town Hall recently were invited to be the guests of the society to hear an address by Mr H. R. Slater, Dip.Phys.Ed., Loughborough. Mr Slater gave an outline of the courses he went through at Loughborough and later in Sweden. The facilities at Loughborough included a glass-sided swimming pool, fully-equipped gymnasium, a recreation hail with lecture rooms, and physiotherapy rooms. Outside were four Rugby fields, eight soccer fields, 24 tennis courts, possibly the finest running track in England, with, plenty of grounds and pavilions for softball, cricket, and other games. The course in Sweden was very short, Mr Salter said, but a great deal was seen in the time available. Some of the gymnastic work was outstanding. The Swedes appeared to have little interest in games, but gymnastics were very popular.
