WATERING FACILITIES

BURNSIDE SALE YARDS CRITICISM OF CONDITIONS The amenities for watering stock at the Burnside sale yards were criticised by the inspector, Mr I. Grant, in a report to committee members of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals yesterday. Mr Grant referred to a case in which pigs had been railed from Lawrence on Tuesday week and had not been provided with water on Wednesday. The drinking troughs were in a filthy condition, being cleared out only once every three weeks. This state of affairs had existed for a considerable period, stated Mr Grant. The committee decided to write to the secretary of the saleyards company, insisting that action be taken to remedy the situation. The practice of exhibiting at shows cows which had not been milked was also condemned by Mr Grant. Judges often insisted upon entries being in full milk, and this, in the inspector’s opinion, gave the cows undue discomfort. The Taieri and Tokomairiro Agricultural and Pastoral Societies insisted upon milked cows being exhibited, but this was not the case in other centres. The chairman, Mr. R. Fountain, moved that the society request show authorities to include in their schedules a clause requiring cows to be milked during the morning before exhibiting. Mr. Fountain presided over Messrs J. Black, B. Deaker, A de Beer, H. Henderson, J. Bews, R. Stevenson, M. Henderson and A. Clark. The secretary of the Mt. Benger Saleyards Company advised the committee of the watering conditions at the yards, and stated that the directors were endeavouring to have pipes laid on to the area.—After some discussion, it was decided to acknowledge the letter and request the company to make every effort to arrange adequate facilities.
