Samoans Have No Worries About Cost-of-living Trend
LAKE SUCCESS, Rec. 11 p.m. Dec. 8. While the cost nf living spirals upwards in most parts of the world it is no higher in Samoa to-day than it ever was, said Mr G. R. Laking, special representative of the New Zealand Government, in evidence before the United Nations Trusteeship Council to-day. He had been asked about the comparative cost of living in Samoa in 1947 and 1939, and he replied: “ For a Samoan it <s now exactly what it was before the war and in the nineteenth o.en'urv, namely, the effort involved in raising enough bananas and coconuts to sustain him. If he is prepared to put in two days’ work a week in his plantation he can support himself.”
