Wanganella Repairs May be Commenced on Anniversary of Stranding
Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, Dec. 8. Many ,south Island workers will be employed in the major repair work to t.\ie trans-Tasman liner Wanganella, which wiU enter the floating dock at Wellington on January 19. About 100 ,j men, chiefly skilled boilermakers and welders, will be required for the job, working about 50 a shift on both day and night shifts.
It is eupected that the Wanganella will remain in the floating dock for about j>ix months undergoing repairs. While she‘is there other ships requiring docking facilities may be transferred to Auckland or Port Chalmi^s.
Accommodation for the workers from other centres constitutes a problem for t he repair contractors, Messrs William Cable and Company, Ltd. It will iaot be possible to accommodate the men on the ship, and lodging will Require to be found elsewhere.
Three experts will be brought from Britain to supervise the work, and it may yet be necessary to import some workers from Australia. It is hoped that work will begin on the first anniversary of the stranding of \'he ship on Barrett’s Reef at the entrance to WellThgton Harbour.
