Ministerial The Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, will arrive in Dunedin by air this morning and will spend a few days in the city. Mr D. S. Coombs was yesterday appointed by the University Council as lecturer in geology at the University. Dr W P. Morrell, professor of history at the University of Otago, was appointed by the University Council yesterday to deliver the inaugural address next year. As it was probably the . of the University Council that Mr H P. Kidson would attend, the chancellor, the Verv. Rev D. C. Herron, at yesterday s mee'ting thanked him for his valued service to the University and wished him a happy retirement. . . , Mr P A. Smithells, the newly-appointed director of the School of Physical Education, was present at the monthly meeting of the University Council yesterday and was welcomed by the chancellor, the Very Rev. D. C. Herron. At ihe meeting of the council of the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce yesterday the chairman (Mr A. C. Stephen-) referred to the deaths of Mr H. L. Gibson and Mr George Scott, the chairman stating that both had been valued members of the chamber. Members of the council stood in silence as a mark °f respect. Additional scholarships awarded by tne University Council at its monthly meeting yesterday were:—W.E.A. bursary, J. Warburton: extension of W.E.A. bursary for one year, D. W. Gordon: Scott Memorial Medal J. D. K. North; Jefferson Memorial Prize W. O. S. Phillipps. The death of Mr A. A. Restieaux was referred to by Mr D. A. Solomon at a meeting of the Otago Cricket Association’s Management Committee last night. Mr Restieaux, he said, had been a tower of strength first as a player, then as an umpire, member of the committee and eventually a life member of the association. It was decided to send a letter of sympathy to the relatives. . Mr Basil Sanderson has been appointed chairman of the board of directors of the Shaw Savill and Albion Company in place of Mr VV. C. Warwick. Mr Warwick asked to be relieved of the responsibilities of the position because of pressure of other business. During the war Mr Sanderson was director of port and transit control at the British Ministry of War Transport At the end of the war he was appointed managing director of the company. Other appointments made are those of Sir Ernest Murrant, deputy chairman, and Mr W. E. Kevill, general manager.
