ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT "Subscriber," Dunedin.—(l) In 1928. (2) Rapier was the only other starter. Jottings The first race at Tapanui on Saturday is timed to start at 11.45 a.m. W. J. Broughton did not ride a winner at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Handicaps for the first day of the Dunedin meeting will be declared on Monday. Nominations for the Wyndham and Southland meetings are due to-morrow. Hart Royal At the Gore meeting in October Hart Royal won the Wendon High-weight Handicap from First Out and Fine Night, proving that the distance was no trouble to him. The Wild Chase galloper has 7.4 in the Tapanui Handicap and should be prominent at the finish. Should Improve At the Wairio meeting Effervescence finished third in the Novice Handicap to Plain Pal and Good Sport, and very little improvement on that form will be required to make the Nightly filly a divi-dend-payer at Tapanui. Related to Grill
Glenesk, a candidate for the Trial Handicap at Tapanui, is a half-sister to Grill, having been got by Siegfried from Lochlaggan. Glenesk has not yet shown any form. By Ringmaster
Show Boy, one of those engaged in the Trial Handicap*at Tapanui, is a three-year-old by Ringmaster from Lavish. Last season he won the Dominion Handicap, of five furlongs, on the second day of the Dunedin autumn meeting in March. Slick Amiss Slick, who had been working attractively in preparation for the Tapanui meeting, has gone lame and his owner, Mr J. P. O’Brien, has decided to have him turned out for 12 months.
Promising Hurdler Incident should take high honours in hurdle events. Trained at Awapuni by J. J. Waller, he is an aged bay gelding by Lord Quex from Squeeze, by Psychology from the Martian mare Caress, the dam of Cuddle, winner of a New Zealand Cup and two Auckland Cups. Likes Pacemaking
Wedding Ring, a firm favourite in the Randwick Handicap on the final day at Hutt Park, jeopardised her prospects by leaving the mark slowly. The Gold Bar mare was never able to reach the lead on this occasion, and, after being sixth into the straight, failed to fight on. Pacemaking tactics seem to suit her, and the next time she begins well she should do better.
Prospect at Tapanui In the Novice Handicap on the second day of the D.J.C. spring meeting, Royal Anne, after getting a break at the start, led practically throughout, Glen Cona getting up in the last stride to make a dead-heat of -it. Royal Anne is in the Stewards’ Handicap at Tapanui and should finish in the money.
