HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD CHAIRMAN
MR W. R. BRUGH TO RETIRE His intention of retiring was announced by the chairman of the Otago High Schools’ Board, Mr W. R. Brugh, at the board’s final meeting of the year yesterday afternoon. Mr Brugh has been a meiftber of the board for 31 years and chairman for the past 12 years. Announcing his intention, Mr Brugh said that his period as Education Board representative would expire in February and that he would not seek reelection.
Members expressed appreciation of Mr Brugh’s services during his record term on the board and several speakers pressed him to reconsider his
decision. This he declined to do, stating that he felt it was time he was replaced by a younger man. The recommendations of the rector of the Otago Boys’ High School and the principal of the Otago Girls’ High School in connection with the David Baxter Memorial Bursaries were adopted and. the awards will be made to R. M. Freeman and Josephine Pilkington. Minutes of appreciation of the services of the retiring rectors of the King’s and Otago Boys’ High Schools. Mr D. S. Chisholm and Mr H. P. Kidson, were approved. The board also placed on record its appreciation of the services rendered by Mr W. Lang as manager of Campbell House since 1939. The annual reports of the principals of the three schools under the board’s jurisdiction were received. Mr Brugh presided. Others present were—Mrs E. E. McMillan, Miss L. S. Morton, Bishop Fitchett, Professor T. D. Adams, Messrs R. F. Barr, W. Jacobsen, J'. C. H. Somerville, and G. Stratton.
