SPECTACULAR PUNTER
NEW ZEALANDER IN AUSTRALIA MELBOURNE, Dec. 8. The spectacular New Zealand punter, Leonard Wanliss, who is known to bookmakers as ” New Zealand,” has announced that he has finished with big punting, and in future will bet only in small sums. His swansong at Mentone during the week-end netted him £19,500 on his own admission. Turf observers believe that in the past two months he has won about £IOO,OOO. Mr Wanliss laid only two bets on Saturday—one on Atomic Lass, which won by half a length, and the other on Dick Turpin, which won by a neck, and then survived a protest. Mr Wanliss savs lie now intends returning home.
