Curtana, the surprise winner of the Irwell Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, is a bay filly by Paper Slipper from Royal Coat, by Pink Coat from Princess Thurnham, by Thurnham from Heather Dew. by Dick Hammerhand. She is trained at Hawera by G. W Moore. In Splendid Order Tlie Vincent Jockey Club’s course at Matakanui is in splendid order, and the track is carrying a nice sole of grass. The waiter paid a brief call while passing through the district recently, and was impressed by the general appearance of the course. A number of Wingatui trainers have already expressed their intention to patronise the club’s race meeting on January 9 and 10.

A New Starter Mr R. A. Paterson, who will act as starter at the Cromwell Jockey Club’s meeting, has raced several horses, including Master Hotspur, the winner of (he 1938 John Grigg Stakes in the smart time of 47 3-ssec. At that time, however, he was not carrying Mr Paterson’s colours. Master Hotspur, who has recently been at the service of breeders in the Gore district, is at present running out on a farm near Naseby.

Hurdles Winner Baksoon, the winner of the Hurdles at the Woodville meeting, is a five-year-old gelding by Christopher Robin from Dialogist, by Diacquenod from Oratress, by Demosthenes from Equitas, by Advance. Oratress won the New Zealand Cup in 1920, and Equitas was the 1910 winner of the Stewards’ Handicap.
