Excellent Performance by Silver Ring

MANY NOTABLE WINNERS As far as local racing enthusiasts are concerned, the main attraction in Christmas week will be the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting at Wingatui on Boxing Day and December 27, and the fact that nominations for the meeting are due to-day serves to recall the names of some of the winners of the Dunedin Cup, which is backed by the Publicans’ Handicap. Included in the list of winners of the Cup are such outstanding gallopers as Lurline, Sir Modred, Vanguard, Nelson, Advance, Warstep, Amythas, Loughrea, Count Cavour, Nightmarch, Silver Scorn, Silver Ring and Golden Souvenir. Only two, horses have won the race twice in succession—Mata, in 1879 and 1880, and Stepdancer, in 1906 and 1907, but horses who have won it twice at intervals are Templeton, Lady Emma and Rorke’s Drift When he won in 1936 Silver Ring carried 10.4, the next best weight-carrying performance being that of Warstep, who won in 1915 with 5.13. The time record for the race is held at 2min. 30 l-ssec. by Studley Royal, the winner in 1938.
