FIGHTING IN KASHMIR

RAIDERS CLAIM SUCCESSES Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 6. Raiders and insurgents in the Poonch sector of Kashmir are using trails which Moghul rulers charted 500 years ago in an attempt to cut the Indian’s Army’s eight-mile line of supply and communications from Jammu, says Reuter’s correspondent in the area. They have subjected the Indian positions north-west of Poonch to heavy mortar and sniping attacks. The raiders are attempting to effect a link between their forces operating from the Bhimbar and Mirpur area and their base at Rajaori. Thousands of bedraggled, hungry, and heatstricken refugees are trekking up to 100 miles in straggling processions to the defensive perimeters. Some, job weak to walk, are carried on beds or shoulders of the fit. The “ Free Kashmir Government,” in a communique, says that its advance guard crossed the River Chenab, 20 miles from Jammu and were advancing south after capturing Aknur. “Free Kashmir” troops also surrounded a garrison at Naoshera. 30 miles north-west of Aknur.
