FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago 3DaUi> {Times DUNEDIN, DECEMBER 8, 1862 Messrs Driver, Maclean and Co. quote first-class draught horses from £BS to £110; second-class £55 to £BO, inferior £35 to £SO. First-class saddle and harness horses from £55 to £BO, second-class £35 to £SO, inferior £2O to £3O. “A meeting of the provisional directors of the Water Works Company was held on Saturday,rat which Mr Thompson, the chief surveyor, who is consulting engineer to the board, attended. Several schemes were con- . sidered and that which was received ' with most favour was one for the supply of upwards of 100,000 gallons per day, which is far in excess of present ■ requirements. The directors determined to advertise for a practical engineer to investigate rhe design whicn. when done will be laid before the public.” ‘ The usual weekly meeting of the Dunedin Debating Club will be held this evening at Gray's assembly room, the subject for debate being “Is it ' necessary to have recourse to arms to compel the Maori to submit to British law? ” :? “Great efforts are being made in Southland to secure the trade of the Lake district,” says the Daily Times, ! “ and a steamer is to be placed shortly * on Lake Wakatipu by an Invercargill firm. We are given to understand that the steamer will be fitted out and run- * ning in about six weeks.” The Tasmanian newspaper Mercury states: "In the shipping trade during the month past unusual briskness has manifested itself, the principal portion of our vessels trading between Hobart Town and the several New Zealand v ports, but particularly with Dunedin. Fourteen vessels have arrived here from New Zealand, viz. three from In- ; vercargill, three from Lyttelton and eight from Dunedin, and in the period 10 vessels have departed, viz. five for Dunedin, two for' Lyttelton, and two for Auckland and one for Invercargill” .
