RECTOR RETIRES

KING’S HIGH SCHOOL ENTERTAINED BY PUPILS’ PARENTS High tributes were paid to the ability and character of Mr D. S. Chisholm, M.A., the retiring rector of King’s High School, by speakers at a social evening and dance in his honour held by the Parents’ Association in the school assembly hall last night. Official guests included the Mayor, Mr Cameron, who gave a short address; the Anglican Bishop of Dunedin, Bishop Fitchett; the principal of the Otago Girls’ High School, Miss M. S. Fitzgerald; the rector of the Otago Boys’ High School, Mr H. P. Kidson; the chairman of the Otago High Schools Board, Mr W. R. Brugh; and Dr and Mrs D. G. McMillan. During the evening a presentation was

made to Mr and Mrs Chisholm on behalf of the Parents’ Association. After Mr and Mrs Chisholm had been piped on to the stage, the president of the Parents’ Association, Mr G. Stratton, spoke of the great work done by the rector and his wife since they came to the school 12 years ago, when it was first opened. Mr Chisholm had been a teacher for 41 years, said Mr Stratton, and in that time he had opened two new schools—King’s and waimate, The rector had proved himself a wonderful teacher, because he not only gave his pupils learning, but also character. “A rector t of King’s High School must gain the approval of the boys, their parents, and last, but not least, Mr Stratton,” said Mr Brugh. “Mr Chisholm has done all this, with his smiling and persuasive manner. The high esteem in which King’s High School is held throughout New Zealand is due largely to his efforts.” Mr Brugh concluded by wishing Mr and Mrs Chisholm many years of happy retirement. Mr Chisholm thanked the speakers for their eulogistic remarks, and said that the Parents’ Association had proved a great source of strength to the school. Not only had it helped him on numerous occasions, but it had provided material aid to the school in the form of instruments for the band, hurdles, and furniture for the assembly hall. The new rector, Mr W. Laing, and his wife were then introduced by Mr Brugh to the Parents’ Association, and he replied, saying that he intended to do everything he could to maintain the high standard of the school built up by the work of Mr Chisholm.
