FOOD CONSERVATION

MORE DRASTIC MEASURES POSSIBLE AMERICA’S VOLUNTARY EFFORT Rec. 9 p.m. WASHINGTON, Dec. 4. The Truman Committee to-day announced intensification of the United States voluntary food savings programme to meet “ desperate needs.” abroad and avert “ the grave inflationary dangers ” at- home. The committee said that more drastic measures, including price control on meat, and even rationing, may be necessary before next spring. The committee recommends intensifying the shut-down in the distilling industry and extending the conservation programme in the brewing industry. The committee, however, places . greatest stress on “ eat less ” habits by individuals. “ The present indication is that there will be sufficient food produced in 1948 to maintain food.consumption with a level 14 per cent, above the pre-war average. But the total food supplies in 1948 will be about 4 per cent, below 1947. Within that narrow margin lie great inflationary dangers If some consumers seek more than their fair share, the price of food, already high, could be bid up beyond the reach of millions of American families.”
