VISIT TO LINCOLN
Party of Farmers A party of 34 farmers from North Otago took advantage of a trip organised by Federated Farmers to examine the experimental work at Lincoln College. Leaving early on Wednesday morning, the party arrived at Lincoln about 11.30 a.m. Members of the staff of the college welcomed the party, which inspected the various breeds of stud sheep. After lunch the party was shown the various pastures and crops, upon which experimental and developmental work was being conducted. The wheat crops gave promise of excellent yields, while outstanding pastures were being developed from the new A 1 ryegrass. One field of lucerne also impressed all. In the late afternoon the party visited Ashley Dene Farm, an area of 78 acres of light land which previously carried one sheep to the acre. The land has been reclaimed from near barrenness to become a profitable farming area carrying 1824 ewes and 1106 ewe hoggets. The outstanding possibilities of such a system of farming on this type of land was shown by the healthy appearance of the cover of subterranean clover and a new strain of lucerne imported from Canada.
