BANANAS EXPECTED
ORANGES DUE THIS MONTH STRAWBERRIES PLENTIFUL The Matua arrived at Auckland this week with a shipment of bananas. The part of the shipment for Dunedin should arrive towards the end of next week. Tire next shipment of oranges for Dunedin is expected by the Waitaki towards the end of this month. A few New Zealand grapefruit have been available, but lemons are completely off the market. Cherries are in steady supply from Central Otago. Small grades are selling at fairly low prices, but choice qualities are commanding satisfactory rates. Strawberries are in good supply, with a steady market. Tomatoes from Nelson, Christchurch and local hothouses are in good supply, with prices unchanged on last week's rates. Gooseberries are in good supply, and a few black currants have made an appearance. Vegetables are offering at low prices. Practically all varieties are in excess of requirements. New potatoes are in heavy supply, and the prices ruling for Nelson varieties will barely pay expenses. Locally-grown potatoes from Outram and Oamaru are be-, ginning to accumulate in the marts, and only extra choice lines are realising ceiling prices. The potato market is in marked comparison with last season, when rationing of supplies had to be introduced. Green peas are in heavy supply, but prices are ' disappointing for growers. Broad beans are almost unsaleable, and lettuce are offering at ridiculously low prices. Cabbage and cauliflower are both in good supply, with prices lower. White turnips are in heavy supply. Cucumbers from Canterbury are selling well. Out-side-grown varieties from Auckland are expected to arrive next week. Market Prices The prices ruling at the end of the week were:— Cherries: Choice, to 2s 3d lb; others, Is to Is 4d. Strawberries: Choice, to 3s; others, Is 6d to 2s a punnet. Tomatoes: Local, 2s 5d to 2s 8d lb; Christchurch, 2s to 2s 4d lb; Nelson, Is 9d to 2s lb. New potatoes: Local, 31 d to 4Jd lb; Nelson, 2d to 3d. Green peas, 3d to 5d lb. Broad beans, to Id lb. Spinach, to Is 6d a bundle. Lettuce: Choice, to Is 6d a dozen; others, unsaleable. Cauliflowers: Choice, to lOd each; others, 3d to 4d. Cabbage, 2s 6d to 4s a case Asparagus, to 21s a dozen. Cucumbers, 18s to 24s a dozen. Leeks, to 3d a bunch. Carrots, to 2s 6d a sugar bag. White turnips, 2s a dozen.
