Youth Choir at Both Services, 11 a.m. and 6.30 p.m. word rS m STrutlt TMble God "FOR THE LETTER KILLETH, BUT THE SPIRIT GIVETH LIFE.” 2 Cor. 3:6. This passage is commonly misquoted to teach that strict attention to the exact wording or requirements of the Bible is “ THE LETTER,” and is wrong and brings death: while a general. BUT NOT TOO PRECISE, practice of the “ spirit ” is right and brings life. THIS WOULD MAKE THE SCRIPTURES USELESS, Bible doctrines and commands vague and not binding; everything subject to the varying interpretations, whims, desires, etc., of each individual. By this, every one could write his own Bible; do as he pleased; demand eternal life ON HIS OWN TERMS. This is altogether wrong. The correct understanding of this passage is as given below; and proved by Scripture. IT IS NOT a contrast be-tween-stickling for literal words—and—enlightened allowance—; but—between the “OLD COVENANT” or “Law of Moses” —and the “NEW COVENANT,” or “ life ” throbgh Christ. (a) By “the letter,” Paul meant “the law of Moses.” . THIS IS PROVED BY THE CONTEXT. Paul refers to the “ Law of Moses ” in v. 7 as “ THE MINISTRATION OF DEATH,” written and engraven in stones ”; in v. 14, “ were blinded . . same vail untaken away in the reading of the Old Testament; which vail is DONE AWAY IN CHRIST ”; v. 15, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart . . . turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.” Also in Rom. 2: 27-9, “the uncircumcision . . . judge thee, WHO BY THE LETTER . . . DOTH TRANSGRESS THE LAW . . . circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, AND NOT IN THE LETTER.” (b) The “ letter,” or law of Moses, brought death. The context calls the Law of Moses—“ in ministration of death,” v. 7; and “A MINISTRATION OF CONDEMNATION,” v. 9. Rom. 7: 4-10, “ye also are become dead to the law by . . . Christ . . . sins ... by the law. did . bring forth . . . death. But now we are delivered from the law . . . _ that we should serve in newness of spirit, and NOT IN OLDNESS OF THE LETTER . . . the commandment ... I found to be DEATH.” Gal. 2: 15, "by the WORKS OF THE LAW SHALL NO FLESH BE JUSTIFIED”; 3: 21, “If . . . law . . . could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.” 3: 10, " as many as ... of the law are under curse.” Rom. 4. 15. “THE LAW WORKETH WRATH." (c) “ Spirit ” is the new covenant in Christ; WHICH BRINGS “ LIFE.” Context, v. 8, “ How shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious? ” v. 17, “ the Lord is that Spirit . . . there is liberty.” v. 18, “we all . . . ARE CHANGED . . . from glory to glory, even LAW OF SIN AND DEATH.” Heb. 9: 15, " the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free FROM THE LAW OF SIN AN DDEATH.” Heb. 9: 15, “ the new testament . . . they which are called might receive . . . eternal inheritance.” These Scriptures should make it plain that THE CONTRAST IS BETWEEN the " Law of Moses,” WHICH WAS THE I.ETTER ’’—and Jesus Christ. WHO WAS THE " SPIRIT,” and brought “ life,” in place of the former " death.” FREE “BIBLE TRUTH” LITERATURE. Address: P.O. Box 857, Dunedin. QUESTIONS INVITED. W. A. DUNCAN.
