Dorset Down Sheep Arrive in Southland

An exhibit which created a great deal of interest at the Winton A. and P. Society’s show was of two Dorset Down ewes, the first ever imported into New Zealand. These ewes, two of 10 and one ram imported by Mr J. D. Henderson, of Otapiri, arrived in New Zealand on October 20, and were delivered to him late last week, after they had been for some time in quarantine. Mr Henderson intends to us» them for breeding, as it is considered in England that they produce heavier fat lambs than do Southdowns. The sheep are similar in appearance to Southdowns, although they are bigger. They should not be confused with Dorset Horns, as these are an entirely different breed, the only point in common being that they come from Dorsetshire. It is reported that they do not give as much trouble at lambing as do Southdowns.
