HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET

OTAGO BOYS* SUPERIOR FIRST INNINGS WIN In a one-day cricket match, played at King's yesterday, Otago Boys’ High School defeated King’s High School on the first innings. Batting first, King’s compiled the small score of 114, and had scored 54 runs for no wickets in the second innings when rain stopped play. Otago Boys hit out freely and made 255 for the loss of seven wickets before declaring the innings closed. The opening batsmen for Kings, l. Page and J. Cunningham, were confident, but D. Christie, with his slow deliveries troubled the players. When the first three King’s men had been dismissed, a rot set in, and the side was soon all out. Attacking the bowling from the beginning the Otago Boys’ players sent thenscore mounting rapidly. A. R. Lonsdale batted solidly for 50, and 77 runs were added in a bright partnership between J. Robertson and R. M. Smith. The latter, who had been batting aggresively, his 51 including two 6's, was well caught by Cunningham on the boundary, while Robertson gave a correct display to reach 3J, at which stage he retired.
