SIGNIFICANT FIGURES
P.A. GREYMOUTH, Dec. 4.
The most significant change in the byrelection was in the town of Greymouth, where nearly half the total number of votes were recorded. Here the Labour majority of 1381 at the general election a year ago was reduced on the preliminary count to 104 yesterday. In the one other big town in the electorate, Hokitika, the National candidate had a majority of 17, compared with a deficit of 280 a year ago. South of the Grey River, within fhe old electoral boundaries, the National candidate was estimated to hold a majority. As was generally expected, the mining centres, principally those in the portion of the electorate which was subtracted from Buller and added to Westland before the last general election, gave Labour the greater part of its reduced majority. Six of the principal mining centres gave Labour a majority of over 1400. but even in these areas the National Party recorded gains.
