OLYMPIC PROSPECT
NEW AUSTRALIAN SPRINTER SEASON’S FASTEST TIME EQUALLED Rec. 9 p.m. SYDNEY, Dec. 4. - In his first timed run since returning from Japan, the Australian sprinter, Clarrie Hayes, covered 100 yards in 9.9 seconds, equalling John Treloar’s fastest time of the interclub season. His run was clocked by four watches under the supervision of the secretary of the Australian Amateur Athletic Union. Hayes ran on a sodden and heavilygrassed track, the first 25 yards of which was slightly upgrade. The time run by HayCs is three-tenths of a second outside the Australian amateur record shared by Treloar, Carlton and Dunn. Completely unorthodox in style, Hayes runs with clenched fists and tense muscles. Officials, who have been dubious about Hayes’s times recorded in Japan because he was previously unknown in athletics, are convinced of his Olympic quality. The former champion sprinter, Teddy Hampson, says: “When Hayes learns relaxation and how to start he will be a world beater."
