TARGETS RETAINED

CANADIAN FOOD PRODUCTION UNCERTAINTY OVER BRITISH REQUIREMENTS Rec. 11 p.m. OTTAWA, Dec. 4. Uncertainty over the renewal of British food contracts, which include meats, cheese, and poultry products, was reflected in the final actions of the Dominion-Provincial Agricultural Conference. While the conference normally sets food production objectives for the following year based on domestic and export needs, the meeting to-day merely suggested that the 1947 programme be continued for 1948. This means that the wheat acreage will remain unchanged at the 1947 total of approximately 24,000,000 acres while that of oats and barley will stay at 14,310,000 and 8,000,000 acres respectively. Retention of the 1947 production targets also applies to meats, dairy products, poultry, fruits and vegetables. Sir Andrew Jones, head of the permanent British Food Mission to Canada, told the conference that if Britain could not buy Canadian farm products it was simply because she aould not 1 afford to pay for them.
