WAITAKI'S MATCH
HIGH SCHOOL CRICKET WIN BY TEN WICKETS Waitaki defeated King’s by 10 wickets in the annual match between the two high schools, which was concluded at the King’s ground yesterday. The game resolved itself into a battle of tactics as King’s, which was given the task of overhauling a total of 290, gradually lost its grip on the game and began to fight for a draw. The more seasoned Waitaki players, however, held all the aces, and after they had dismissed their opponents for the second time at 5.30 pm., they easily obtained the 13 runs required for an outright win. . , . When the match was resumed yesterday morning, the opening batsmen continued with confidence, raising the overnight score of 74 for no wickets to three, figures, but as soon as 100 was on the board the partnership was broken. J. Cunningham had been the senior partner in the firm, and his innings of 63 was well made. Because'of the difficulty in Picrcmg 'J™ well-placed and vigilant Waitaki neld, only three of his scoring strokes reached the boundary. After the opening partnership had been dissolved, the bowlers gained the ascendancy, and wickets fell at a steady rate for King’s to be all out for 176. Forced to follow on, the home side could only reach 126. The captain, I. Page, who made 31 in the first innings, again batted tenaciously for 34, but the others were timid against an attack, out of which the sting had been taken. Simpson, who took four for 16 in Kings tot innings, obtained the best average of the day. J. Sigley also bowled well taking four for. 24 and two for 24 and at one stage in tlae flrst .. analysis read 19 overs, 12 maidens, 15 runs, 4 wickets. Scores
