TESTS IN PACIFIC

. ATOLL CLOSED AS SECURITY MEASURE Rec. 9.30 p.m. NEW YORK, Dec. 2. The United States formally notified the Security Council to-day that it had closed Einwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands for security reasons from December 1. The Council was told that the United States intended to conduct experiments in nuclear fission on the atoll, which is portion of a former Japanese mandate now held by the United States under a United Nations strategic trusteeship agreement.

The Government said that entry to the closed area would be allowed only in accordance with regulations which would be prescribed and periodic inspections by the United Nations were suspended until further notice. The United States Government would of course report to the United Nations on the political, economic, social and educational advancement of the inhabitants of the territory and all possible measures would be taken to ensure that the people of the area were not endangered and were subjected to a minimum of inconvenience.
