BAN ON MAORIS
HOTELKEEPER’S ACTION UNRULY CONDUCT ALLEGED p.A. AUCKLAND, Dec. 3. Because warnings to curb unruly conduct have been unheeded, liquor is no longer being served to Maoris in the Albert ' Hotel, in Queen street. Some Maoris have regarded this decision as an act of racial discrimination, but several influential leaders in Auckland said that it was agreed that the irresponsible section must be taught a lesson, although the disrepute and restrictions might fall on the whole of the Maori community. The manager of the hotel, Mr H. L. Kiddle, confirmed that the ban had been imposed as the result of several, disturbances caused in the bar by Maoris. Warnings had been of no avail, and police intervention had, on at least one occasion, been necessary and for the protection of the staff and in the interests of the other customers, the management had decided that Maoris would not be served until such time as they could behave themselves and act like decent people. A Maori welfare worker in the city said his investigations suggested that the ban had unfortunately been justified.
