DECISION REQUIRED
OVERSEAS AIR TERMINAL LOCATION IN SOUTH ISLAND P.A. INVERCARGILL, Dec. 3. The opinion that the special commission set up to inquire into the establishment of overseas air terminals in New Zealand should be urged to make an early declaration was expressed by speakers at the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association. The general feeling was that the selection of a terminal in the South Island was a matter for experts and that the task of the association was to impress on the Government the immediate necessity of declaring the. location of a commercial airport and overseas air terminal for the South Island. A motion to this effect was passed. A Nelson remit was approved—- " That this association is strongly of the opinion that the interests of air transport in New Zealand will best be served by the immediate announcement that Rongotai will be made the chief permanent airport in Wellington for all types of land-based aircraft and that a start be made at once on improvements and extensions to enable it to fulfil this function.” Other remits approved were:— Ashburton Borough Council: “That the Government be asked to expedite the linking o! feeder services with the main airlines. Nelson. Marlborough, West Coast League of Local Bodies: “That the National Airways Corporation and the Government be asked to reinstate Blenheim as a calling place on the Auckland-Dunedin main trunk air service and that the South Island air service Nelson to Invercargill should be inaugurated.”
