PUBLIC NOTICES IMPORTANT notice to importers and MANUFACTURERS. CONGESTION ON DUNEDIN WHARVES. Owing to serious shed congestion in the Dunedin Wharves and Railway Sheds due to large cargoes having arrived during the past few weeks, it is urgently necessary to make efforts to clear this cargo as soon as. possible. A state of emergency exists, and at a meeting held on Wednesday of representatives of Shipowners, Harbour • Board, Railways, Waterfront Controller, Importers and Shippers’ Association, Commercial Transport Association, and Manufacturers, it was felt that this could only be met by working longer hours in stores and warehouses. Importers are, therefore, asked to co-operate with their carriers in arranging to open stores in the evening and on Saturday mornings. It is felt that a worthwhile co-operative effort to meet this emergency is more desirable than the forced appointment of a Cargo Control Committee with wide statutory compulsory powers. If the congestion is not relieved, the discharge of inward cargoes this week and the next few weeks and the outward shipments from the Port will be seriously affected. All members of the Chamber of Commerce, Manufacturers’ Association, and Importers and Shippers’ Association are asked to treat this matter as urgent. E. WOOD, Secretary, - Otago Importers and Shippers’ Association.
