PROTECTION OF WOMEN
The monthly meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children was attended by Dr McKinnon (chairman), Mesdames Aslin, Ross, Porteous, Orton, Major Hannaford and the secretary (Miss Coe-Smith). The committee conveyed congratulations to the Mayor (Mr Cameron) »,n his re-election to the mayoralty, and also to Mrs W. A. Ross on her re-election to the Hospital Board. The attention of the committee was drawn to the recent assaults on women and girls. It was resolved to forward a resolution to the Minister of Justice: ‘ That the Dunedin branch of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children wishes to draw the attention of the Minister of Justice to the increasing number of assaults on women and girls even in broad daylight, especially In outlying parts of the city, and would ask if legislation could be introduced making the sentences on convicted persons of a more deterrent nature than the mere payment of a fine or probation.”
