' ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT Inquisitive,” Waikouaiti.—(l) Gunga Din. Time, 2min. (2) Sterling Lad. Time, lmin 17sec. Jottings Royal Tan, Howe, and Indian Dawn are doubly engaged on Saturday. Blank Cheque is the logcial favourite for the Hagle.v Handicap. Welcome Guest has been one of the disappointments of the Cup meeting. He finished last in the Metropolitan. To Ride Again T. Webster, who has been training at Otaki since his return from Australia, has been granted a licence to ride. A Good Prospect Hart Royal looks a good prospect for holiday meetings on the southern circuit. He is' engaged at the Tapanui* meeting next week. Siegfried Gelding Vulnerable, who went a good race* in the High-weight Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, is one of B. H. Brodie’s team. He is a six-year-old by Siegfried from a Robespierre mare. Last Win at Easter Gay Stroller has come on well since his race in the New Zealand Cup and he should add interest to the Fendalton Handicap on Saturday. The Foxbridge gelding’s best win was in the Sockburn Handicap at Easter. Engaged at Ellerslic When Liebestraum contested the Derby he was still a hack but as the nominations for the Auckland meeting closed the day before he won he is still eligible for the Queen’s Plate at Ellerslie. Track Improvements . , As the track at Wingatui is being improved in the vicinity of the seven-fur-long post, the races over seven furlongs in the advertised programme will be run over six furlongs and 142 yards.
By Battle Song Brawl is a four-year-old by Battle Song from Scold, by Myosotis from Berate, by Silverado from Reproachful, by Bonny Glen from Lady Disdain. Brawl is in the Trial Handicap at Tapanui. Colt Double Chance scored his third success when he won at Avondale last Saturday. A three-year-old colt by Nizami from Golden Hair, winner of the V.R.C. Oaks, Double Chance is engaged in the Queen’s Plate at Auckland and will not go out at a long price. Hurdles Candidate
In the Middleton Hurdle Handicap on the first day of the C.J.C. meeting Voltaire 10.0 finished third to Fading Light 9.0 and Foreign Ways 9.10. The winner is not engaged in the hurdle event on Saturday and Voltaire meets Foreign Ways on 31b better terms to balance the neck between them in the Middleton Handicap. Voltaire is sure to be one of the favourites and may find Battle Chief the hardest horse to beat. Beaten by Distance
In the New Zealand Cup, Thimble, the each-way favourite, was not forcing the pace for most of the journey but was beaten by the distance. He is top-weight, in the Stoneyhurst Handicap with 9.4, and Distinction, who finished second in the Derby, has 8.11, which means he has a pull of 71b compared with what the two horses carried in the Derby. The shorter distance of the Stoneyhurst Handicap will suit Thimble, but on paper Distinction looks a good prospect.
