Beau le Havre in Auckland Cup

NEW JOCKEY ENGAGED

On only two occasions has a weight heavier than the 9.11 allotted to Beau le Havre in the Auckland Cup been carried by a winner of the race—by Nelson (9.12) in 1888, and by Kindergarten (10.2) in 1942. That fact, however, is not likely to result in the topweight losing any of his supporters for the big event at Christmas. He has 81b more than he won the New Zealand Cup with. H. N. Wiggins will ride the champion, his regular rider, W. Connor, having suggested this, because Wiggins knows the course better than he does. Beau le Havre will no doubt be the early favourite for the race, but another horse who will enter discussions is Signal Officer, who has 8.12, or 41b more than he carried into fourth place in the New Zealand Cup in which, with different riding tactics, he would probably have finished closer up. His weight in the Metropolitan was 9.1.

One of the Australian nominations in Fresh Boy has been given 7.8, compared with 6.11 in the Caulfield Cup, in which he finished third, and 6.10 in the Melbourne Cup, in which he finished second to Hiraji. The Revelation colt will add to the interest in the race if he goes to the post.
