PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ SPORTS

TIE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP

South and Central Otago Sub-associations Two country sub-associations, South and Central Otago, shared the honours at the Primary Schools’ Sports Championship meeting held at the University Oval yesterday. With a total of 28>i points each, they led Musselburgh and Balclutha, last year’s winner. Entries from 35 schools and five sub-associations totalled 2400. The Waitaki Junior High, Oamaru North, and Maheno Schools competed for the first time. An outstanding feature of the day was the lowering of five records—the high jump for boys under 14 by L. Ashton, of Waitaki Junior High School, the 200 yards relay race for boys under 10 by the Caversham team, the 200 yards relay race for girls under 14 by Anderson’s Bay, the 200 yards relay race for girls under 11 by Musselburgh, and the 50 yards skip for girls over 14, which was broken in four successive heats by L. Pont (Wakari), "W. McSkimming (Maniototo Sub-associa-tion), S. Porter (Balclutha), and O. Davidson (Maniototo Subassociation).

Conditions were excellent and with the ground in perfect order the majority of the times were fast. The Championship Shield was presented to the winning teams bv the president of the Otago State Primary Schools’ Sports Association. Mr A. J. Borthwick. The trophy will be held by each sub-association for six months. The meeting was conducted by the superintendent, Mr J. Cameron, and the deputy superintendent, Mr C. Allen, and the secretary, Mr G. H. Aitken, with whom were associated a large number of officials. The Mayor, Mr Cameron, was a visitor to the grounds during the morning. Several of the smaller country schools combined to send teams representing South Otago, Central Otago, East Otago, Maniototo and Taieri. , Abbreviations used are:—Anderson s Bay (A. 8.), Arthur Street (A.), Balclutha (Ba.), Caversham (C.), Central Otago Sub-association (C. 0.), Concord (Co.), Dunedin North Intermediate (Da.).
