BRIGHT CRICKET

HIGH SCHOOLS’ MATCH WAITAKI v. KING’S At the end of the first day of play in the annual match between Waitaki Boys' High Schol and King’s High School an interesting stage had been reached. Waitaki, batting first, scored 290 for eight wickets (declared), and at stumps the opening batsmen for King’s had 74 runs on the board. When play began the sky was overcast and threatening, but the weather cleared and the wicket, which had been dead at the start, became ideal for the batsmen. Waitaki did not look like making a large total until the later batsmen faced a tired battery of bowlers, and sent the total leaping upwards. P. Harris, who made 79, held the team together during his stay of 153 minutes at the wickets. He hit six 4’s and one 6, the same number of boundaries as his brother, J. Harris, scored in making 58. Although their innings were not without blemish, the two brothers showed a commendable attacking spirit and treated loose balls severely. The not out batsmen, B. Anderson (50) and J. Sigley (22) had little respect for the bowling,' which deteriorated in the period before the adjournment. For King’s, W. A. Edgar secured two wickets for 47 and W. Dickson, a slow left-hand spinner,, two for 62 Waitaki declared Its innings closed at ihe interval, and the King’s opening batsmen, I. W. Page and J. Cunningham, played soundly until sturrtps. The latter was more aggresisve, but neither was greatly troubled by the opposing attack. The match, which is being played at the King’s ground, will be continued today. Scores: —
