FRENZIED RIOTING
ARABS IN JERUSALEM ATTACKS ON JEWISH QUARTER Rec. 1.15 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 2. A pitched battle between the police and Arab rioters occurred in the heart of Jerusalem this morning, report agency correspondents. The rioting began when Arabs stormed out of the Old City of Jerusalem and headed towards the Jewish quarter. The police immediately sent out armoured cars and squads armed with tommy guns. Reuter’s office in Princess Mary avenue became the centre of the battle. The correspondent of Reuter's and The Times, London, was stabbed and seriously wounded. Armoured cars barred the Arabs' path to the Jewish quarters. Before retreating the Arabs, who were armed with sticks and stones, smashed shop window's and injured at least one Jewish shopkeeper. The rioters turned from Princess Mary avenue into Juiliun's Way, near the King David Hotel, and began smashing window? and overturning and setting fire to Jews' cars. Hundreds of young Jews, obviously Haganah shock troops, appeared in Dion Square. The rioters, after the police dispersed them, broke into smaller groups and began attacking with renewed fury and set fire to several shops and cars in the Mamillah road district. Two Jews were reported wounded in a mob attack on a Jewish lorry near the Damascus Gate. A report from Nablus, which is the virtual centre ot Arab resistance, says that thousand: of tribesmen and villagers arrived there at dawn to-day. Most of them openly carried arms. A similar report came from Jenin, which is the headquarters of one Arab underground group. Attacks on Jewdsh buses continued in the Tel-Aviv area. One Jewish passenger was seriously wounded. A bomb was thrown in a Tel-Avh suburb, and the police broke up ar. Arab road-block between Tel-Aviv and Jaffa where the mobs are forming
