HIGHER COSTS

PRICES TO RISE TRIBUNAL’S DECISION CLOTHING AND FOOTWEAR Industrial Correspondent WELLINGTON, Dec. 2. Fairly general increases in clothing and footwear prices can be expected to take effect over the next few months. Price adjustments for manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers have been announced by the Price Tribunal consequent upon the increased wages and in particular the higher cost of raw materials from overseas.

Percentage mark-ups for wholesales and retailers have been reduced, thus preventing increased costs at the source having a cumulative effect. Unit margins for the distributive trades are, however, little changed Garments made, from New Zealand wool, which is subsidised by the Government, will not show increases, but rising costs of imported materials will be reflected in prices when new goods reach the market.

Wholesalers report that the effect of the removal of the subsidy on leather will soon be reflected in retail footwear prices. It is expected that prices, generally speaking, over the next six months for clothing and footwear will show a considerable advance over those ruling during the six months just ending.
