SALE OF WAR ASSETS

“It was the most astounding sale I have ever seen. The goods were simply thrown away,” said a witness in the Magistrate’s Court in Christchurch when giving evidence in a claim against the War Assets Realisation Board. The witness was referring to a sale of war assets at Riccarton on October 17, 1946. “ Did you not object about the sale? ” asked the magistrate, Mr A. A. McLachlan. “ No, sir " replied the witness. “ What would be’the use of objecting to the Government? ” The procedure added the witness, was to get rid of the goods as quickly as possible. He had seen lavatory pedestals, worth about £3, knocked down for Is. Another witness said there were goods worth £IOO,OOO at the sale, and only £4OOO had been realised.
