NARROW ESCAPE
BRIGHTON FISHERMAN SUDDEN SINKING OF BOAT A Dunedin resident had. a narrow escape from drowning on Friday morning at Brighton when his fishing boat sank under him as he was returning to shore. He had been using' a borrowed outboard launch for a fishing expedition, and was negotiating a choppy sea between Bailey’s Island and the Brighton Domain when the craft swung crossways to the sea, went down by the nose, and sank almost immediately.
He managed to cling to some kelp, but his hold was precarious, as waves were breaking* over him. Mr J. A. Forbes, of Brighton, saw his predica-' ment. and swam out to him. He assisted him to the shore where it was found that he was suffering considerably from the battering he recevied while clinging to the kelp and his immersion in the water. Residents of the district gave him first aid. He had a good catch of fish on board the boat when she sank. The craft has been recovered, but the outboard engnie, stated to be worth about £9O, was lost.
