STANDARD CODES
PACKAGES AND CONTAINERS DRAFT COPY PREPARED As a result of representations from shipping interests, supported by commercial and workers’ organisations, the development of standard codes and specifications for containers and packaging is being undertaken by the Standards Institute. As part of this programme a draft standard code of practice for the commercial marking and identification of packages has recently been formulated and is now in the course of circulation to interested parties for review and comment. The draft standard code establishes the general principles to be followed in the preparation of packages for marking and in indicating the consignee’s identification mark, the package number and other essential marks, including special handling and storage instructions. In particular, such factors as legibility, size of lettering and location of markings are clearly specified, while special provisions relate to the inclusion of packing lists. The import and export of goods with attendant transhipment and handling necessitates international co-operation on this question. Standard codes of practice are therefore being modelled on those issued by the British Standards Institution and co-ordinated with those issued by the national standards organisations of other countries. They will be of particular interest to the business community generally and all concerned with the consignment of goods.
