THE SCHOOL CERTIFICATE

Sir,—Could you give me any information on the following: At the recent school certificate examination practically all the Fifth Form pupils from Otago Boys' High School were required to obtain a 50 per cent, pass in five subjects as against the usual four, all these boys I understand taking six subjects to allow for a “failing ’’ subject. This seems a very unfair handicap on young students in what was admittedly a difficult enough examination. The reason, I understand, had something to do with the taking (or otherwise) of woodwork, but perhaps you could obtain definite information for me. and also tell me if this was the case in other high schools in the Otago district. —I am, etc., Veritas.

[This letter was referred to the rector of the Otago Boys’ High School. Mr H. P. Kidson, who commented: “Boys not taking the requisite number of units in arts and crafts are required to sit the examination in five subjects. One “A” form at the Otago Boys’ High School studies two languages, and mathematics, and was unable to cover the full arts and crafts course demanded by departmental regulation. This is also the case with other secondary schools throughout Otago.” Mr Kidson added that further information could be obtained by the writer from head teachers of any secondary schools. —Ed. O.D.T.]
