SITUATIONS VACANT
Sir,—Allow me thoroughly to endorse “ Secretary-Typiste’s ” letter on the way in which applications are most frequently treated. In my own case, I could name several instances where I have replied to advertisements (number or box) and have neither received a reply nor have my copies of testimonials been returned. Also, most firms require age to be stated. Why should this be necessary? Surely it is qualification and ability that they are requiring, and testimonials tell of the necessary experience. Thus all particulars are received by the advertiser (and how many more in his office, I wonder) but none are given.
Another most unfair thing is ” salary commensurate with ability ” or “ state salary required,” which tries to put the onus of salary on the applicant. Why cannot the advertiser be honest and state what salary he is prepared to offer? If. for various reasons, advertisers must use a nom de plume, then the advertisement should state the nature of the business. There are very few, if any, businesses so unusual that an advertisement would attract the attention of ,a competitor, to the detriment of the former.—l afn, etc.. Fair Play Typiste.
