AMATEUR GOLF

OTAGO STROKE CHAMPIONSHIP , SCOULER AND DIXON TIE With aggregates of 303, J. A. Scouler and F. W. Dixon tied in the 72-hoie Otago Amateur Stroke Championship, played at Balmacewen during the week-end. In the final round, J. A. Scouler, an early starter, carded a steady 75, and with 16 holes played F. W. Dixon, who was two strokes behind Scouler at the end of the third round, appeared to have every chance, but he crashed with a 6 at the seventeenth hole and finished in 73.

D. C. Bennie, who was also round in 73, put in a strong challenge over the last nine holes, and finished in third place with an aggregate of 304. T. C. Tyrrell had a stroke lead on the field at the beginning of the fourth round, but after a brilliant 3 at the first hole he made mistakes and finished with an 83. Scouler and Dixon will play off for the championship over 18 holes. At the end of the first round J. A. Scouler and F. W. Dixon led the field with one over par scores of 74. They were followed by A. G. Sime 75, T. C. Tyrrell, J. W. Mclntosh, and I. A. McLean, each 76. A fresh northerly made conditions rather more difficult in the afternoon. After a disastrous first round of 84, A. Gibbs returned a fine card of 72—the best score of the day. He was followed by D. C. Bennie 73, Tyrrell 75, J. N. Lemon, Scouler, G-. C. McKay, and J. A. McCausland, all 76. At the conclusion of the third round Tyrrell, aggregate 227, led by one stroke from Scouler, who was followed by Sime 229, Dixon 230. Bennie 231, and Gibbs 232. • The course was in good order, and, apart from heavy rain yesterday in the late afternoon, conditions were ideal. Rout won with a score of 39 points, followed by E. H. Calder 35 and J.’ Robertson 35. In the final of the Fourball Knock-out Competition, played during the week-end, E. H. Calder and R. OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT

Arrangements have been made between the Golf Professionals’ Association and the Manawatu Golf Club to stage a three-day open tournament for professionals and amateurs at Palmerston North next Easter. It Is expected that all the leading professionals will enter, while amateur entries up to 80 or more will be accepted.
