GAPTAIN CARGILL
Sir,—ln view of the approaching Centenary I feel Impelled to draw attention to a growing tendency towards non-ac-cordance to my grandfather of bis rightful position in the pioneer community. Captain Cargill was the leader, founder and first Superintendent, which latter office ho held continuously till failing health compelled retirement. He with brother officers, was on the point of going to Canada with a somewhat similar scheme when asked to take this leadership. To appreciate the affection and esteem of the early day community for him we have onlv to look around to find Cargill road, Cargill street, Mount Cargill, and Invercargill. A monument was erected within two or three years of his death by voluntary public subscription. I leave a discriminating public to draw its own conclusions.—l am, etc., Catherine M. Cntten.
