Although most of the main city picture theatres were packed at night, the audiences at matinee and suburban sessions were exceptionally small at many theatres on ’ Saturday. The ban on the admission of children under 12 caused a big drop in the takings at theatres screening “ Universal Exhibition ” films, but in a number of cases the adult attendances were below the usual week-end size. 9
Some theatre managers blamed the wet weather, but others said emphatically that the infantile paralysis outbreak had .kept many adults away. Other theatres reported fairly normal attendances at all sessions. The managers pointed out that they did not cater for children at any time, and adults were attending in their usual numbers. On the other hand, the manager of one large city theatre said the’audiences at all sessions oh Saturday were among the smallest on reord. On such a wet day he could usually count on full houses, but instead of the usual packed house on Saturday night the theatre was only half full,
