EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago ©all? Utmes DUNEDIN, DECEMBER 1, 1862 “The William Miles, with 339 immigrants for the nonconformist settlement, arrived in Auckland on November 12. ■ The passengers complained bitterly of the unseaworthy condition of the vessel, the state of which and the general arrangements on board appearing to have been of a discreditable character.” “A cricket match,” says the Daily Times, “ was played on Saturday afternoon on the recreation ground between an eleven of the Dunedin Cricket Club and members of the Princess Theatre company, aided by two or three other gentlemen. The ground —as we suppose it must be called, despite its swampy state —was wholly unfit for anything like comfortable playing.” The Princess men scored 50 runs—byes numbering 20 or 22—the Dunedin Club 49. Princess won bv one run on the first innings. “Carey, with his fast underhand bowling, took seven or eight Princess Club wickets.”
\‘The ladies and the Town Board Election.—To the Editor of the Daily Times. Dear Mr Editor,—Do let me say a word or two on behalf of the ladies of Dunedin, Don’t, for pity’s sake, select those stupid members of the old Town Board. Pray let us have gentlemen with sense, gallantry, and feeling enough to make us good streets and roads,, so that we may enjoy the glorious scenery of this lovely place . . . the mud fooipaths which are so liberally bestowed upon us ,by those ancients in office who, I hope, will be quietly laid on the shelf ticketed ‘dangerous to the health and adverse to the improvement of the place.’—The Ladies of Dunedin, November 29, 1862.”
Mr John Switzer, a candidate for a position on the Town Board (three representatives each from the four wards), in a pre-election address, said: "A good supply of water was needed, and there was no town in the colonies better situated for getting that supply cheaply and of good quality. There were, almost na,tural reservoirs at the top of Maclaggan street, London street, and Pitt street.”
