PHYSICAL EDUCATION
APPLICATIONS FOR BURSARIES CLOSING DATE EXTENDED P.A. WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. He was anxious to give all suitable candidates the opportunity of making application for one of the bursaries which were available in physical education at the University of Otago, and it had been decided that applications would be received up to January 15, 1948, said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, to-day. He added that the bursaries were of a value of £7O annually, together -with £4O annually if the successful applicant was obliged to live away from home. Full fees for the course would be paid in addition. The tenure of the bursary would be three years at the University of Otago and successful applicants would be required to give a guarantee that they would serve in physical education work of a type approved by the Director of Education for a period of three years where the bursary had been of a value of £7O, and for four years if the bursary had been of a total value of £llO a year for three years. These periods would be reduced proportionately where the bursary was for a shorter period. Applicants must be not less than 17 years of age on December 31, and must have been accredited for or have passed the university entrance examination, or have some equivalent or higher qualification. Because of the shortage of teachers, no teacher in training or any certified teacher was eligible for a physical education bursary in 1948.
