PUBLIC OWNERSHIP
BRITISH RAILWAY SYSTEM PLANS FOR REORGANISATION N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent ■ LONDON, Nov. 27. Plans for the reorganisation of the British railway system after its transfer to public ownership on January lj 1948. are announced. The system will be divided into six regions corresponding very closely to the territories at present covei’ed by the four main line companies, with the exception that a separate region will be created for Scotland and the territory at present covei’ed by the London- and Northeastern Railway Company will be divided into north and south sections Under Government control the whole system will be administei'ed by a central l’ailway executive, with regiona.’ bodies woi’king under its dii’ection. but responsible for detailed administration inside their own territories. Changes in the appearance and design of railway rolling stock will be introduced gradually. It is not expected that there will be any decrease in the present number of railway employees. Sir Cyril Hurcomb, chairman of the British Transport Commission, who announced the changes, said the object of the plan was to unify the British railway system in an organisation which would avoid the dangers of undue centi'alisation.
