BADLY PACKED
FOOD PARCELS FOR BRITAIN LARGE NUMBERS REPORTED PA WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. “We have iust received from the British Post Office a letter drawing attention to the large number of badlypacked food parcels being received from New Zealand,” said the Post-master-general. Mr Hackett, to-day. “The British Post Office points out that in many cases the outer packings comprise yielding cardboard boxes or merely a brown paper wrapping, and frequently no form of interior packing is used. In many cases, tinned and packaged goods are packed together, with the result that pressure of the tinned goods bursts open the packaged goods. “ Further frequent sources of trouble are tins of syrup and jam, the-Tress-on lids of which become dislodged through pressure. The British Post Office points out that this damage not only causes disappointment and inconvenience to the recipients, but also increases the tasks of the British Post Office in dealing with the huge volume of incoming gift parcels now entering the country.” Mr Hackett said the press-on lids should be soldered or stuck down With adhesive tape. He advised senders of gift parcels to save themselves from spending money to iit tie purpose by paying the strictest attention to packing. It should be remembered that parcels are sent in mail bags and that parcels are liable to compression in ships* slings during loading and unloading. Most people were already packing parcels to withstand the rigours of transport, and because of this their parcels were reach ing England in good condition, he concluded.
